Manifesting Serendipity on Linkedin
How I learned to leverage Linkedin to find hidden opportunity
My buddy Casey Rickey🖌️ shared a great post today about how there’s no single Linkedin advice that works for all. Anyone who tells you so is lying to you.
Your LinkedIn experience & strategy should be deeply personal to your interests and objectives.
I started hanging out here in 2020 strictly because I enjoyed the conversation and community.
I was a W2 employee at the time and not selling anything. I can remember some people would say “what’s your niche? Your content is all over the place” and was always slightly bewildered by that because I had no idea the extent to which people market their businesses and sell services here.
I had no “strategy.”
I just fed my curiosity, followed my fascination, and engaged in conversation with others doing the same.
Then I realized the power of this platform for real.
A CMO reached out to me to ask if I wanted to launch an employer brand/talent marketing team at their company.
“I don’t even have the words Brand and Marketing on my resume… what makes you think I have what it takes?” I said.
“I’ve followed you on Linkedin for months. Seen all I need to see. I think you’re perfect for this,” he replied.
After 15 years in operations thinking I “should have been in Marketing” but worrying I’d have to start over (which I couldn’t afford to do), an opportunity to pivot fell right into my lap.
Not only was I getting a crack at the marketing bat, I didn’t even have to take a paycut to do so.
How wild is that?
I took the job and 2 years later, we were acquired for $1.2B, giving me the runway to start my own consultancy teaching others the power of personal branding and Linkedin networking.
The platform can be lifechanging if you use it right.
And I encourage you to be careful who you listen to about how to do that.
There are a lot of people who talk a big game, but it’s all smoke in mirrors and you shouldn’t fall for it.
I tell people all the time that Linkedin is so much more than a job board. It’s so much more than a social media network, too.
Linkedin is a serendipity manifestation machine.
If you’re looking for a partner to help you find YOUR way on Linkedin, I’d love to help.
Hi5,

Liam, love your approach. For me, it's all about the connections and as you said, being curious. I break "all the rules" on the platform all the time, yet I still manage to build. Fir some reason people like my brand of crazy. Happy Saturday!
Thx for sharing your LinkedIn story, Liam. I'm curious what your philosophy to LinkedIn followers/connections is. You've got 45K followers. Is your philosophy the more the better? And how'd you get to that large number (I assume a lot of outbound initially)? Many thx, Rob
